Port Rashid, also called Mina Rashid. It is a commercial port located in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. It is a man-made port that was opened in 1972. It is named after the great Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum. Initially, the Port had a capacity of less than a hundred thousand TEUs and two gantry cranes. After two years of expansion, Port Rashid was able to add 35 berths to its capacity. Present day Port Rashid has a depth of thirteen meters and nine gantry cranes as well as over 1,500,000 TEUs capacity.
With several berths for cargo today, Port Rashid has grown in size since its opening. The Jebel Ali Port helped supplement Port Rashid since its inception in the early eighties. The development of Port Rashid led to Dubai Maritime City and Dubai Drydocks to come up in the vicinity. Interestingly, Dubai is planning on further redevelopments for Port Rashid, causing it to be shut down soon. According to the plans, the cargo operations will be moved to Port Jebel Ali which is the nearest port to Port Rashid. Port Jebel Ali has the capacity to handle all incoming operations with ease.
The authorities announced in 32008 that Port Rashid s being planned to be turned into a cruise terminal. Nakheel will also be claiming a portion of Port Rashid to develop a new and exciting waterfront very soon. Once Port Rashid is converted into a terminal solely for cruise ships, it will help reduce the rush at the other ports in Dubai as well as bring in more tourists to this part of Dubai. The new waterfront will also generate plenty of business, making Port Rashid a commercial hub in the near future.
